Are the any New Zealanders around here? In a few months I'm leaving France to study at University of Auckland, and I was wondering there were any New Zealanders on Jalopnik. It could be great for me to discuss/meat people from NZ

Are you not a meat person from France? Or are you made of something else like baguettes?

I'm an American so, I can't help you with the, uh, Kiwi thing you're looking for.

I haven't even checked where I coud find an apartment or a place to live yet. I know on campus is quite a bit expensive so I'll probably be looking at places in the city.

What are you doing in the Engineering Department? That's where I'm going to study since I'll be a postgrad in Mechanical Engineering.

oh I'm starting the second year of my degree next year. Still haven't gotten my specialisation, but by the looks of it, it's either mechatronics or computer systems.

If I remember correctly, the engineering department will have a new campus for mechanical and a few other stuff at Newmarket (on top what used to be a brewery - how fitting!) early next year. It's about 5 mins drive from the City Campus. I'm not sure if post grad is gonna be split between the two though.

Living on campus is cheaper iirc but spaces are limited for post grad, so maybe flatting might be easier. Try going to the flatting section of TradeMe and you might find something. Just remember to avoid going too far north, west and south, mainly because transport's a pain most of the time!

Thanks for the advice! I'll definitely be checking TradeMe, well once I have a bit more time at the end of my internship. And I don't have my visa yet, but I'll probably be arriving in NZ in early February in order to check out the country and also to find an apartment, which might be easier if I'm there.

Best of luck for your second year of study! I'm lucky enough to be in an engineering school where I don't have to choose any specialisation before the last year (which I'm doing in NZ, an engineering degree is 5 years of studying in France), so I had courses in advanced mathematics and physics for the first 2 years. Then a competitive examination (the same for every students like me across France), which allows you to get into an engineering school (among 200+). the one I got in is geared towards the industry, and tries to train engineers that will have a wide array of skills. That's why I had courses in mechanical engineering (anything from vibrations, stresses, CAD, fluids, ...), industrial engineering (lean management, production management and the likes) as well as power engineering and materials science. But the most interesting part is the workshops where we got to create stuff, I've casted aluminium and other metals, stamped, welded, cut (we have some sweet CNC machines).

Hey Man,

Awesome you're coming over! My name's Kieran - Be cool to grab a drink at some stage.

I live in Rotorua (seriously, come down here sometime) it's about a three hour drive from Auckland. Me and my old man took our bikes out for a ride around lake Rotorua the other day - for reference:

My brother is at AUT - great uni. What kinda wheels have you been lusting over lately? Because we get plenty of Japanese-only specials over here :)

It could be very cool indeed. I don't know yet if I'm going to buy on car while there, but I definitely want to. It will depend on lots of things, like my rent, or whether I can find a part-time job while there. But it would probably be something cheap, around 5000 NZD at most (that Forester STi though), which is roughly what I paid my car in France (2001 Xsara VTS HDI). I don't want to get another French car (which I guess are among the most expansive), and I lean toward something Australian (RWD Holden could be fun) or Japanese and quircky.

Fair enough. Get ready for lots of station-wagons (seriously, we have lots)

Funnily enough I've just sold off two Peugeots! Great cars, parts are a bit hard to get down here. Still missing my 309 :( $5000 will really get you something great down here, I promise. Hit me up when you're over and we'll do something cool!
